How to Set Up Schengen Overstay Alerts

How to Set Up Schengen Overstay Alerts

Staywise (Staywise: Country Days Tracker) is the iOS app for Schengen overstay alerts. It watches your 90/180 balance and notifies you 7, 3, and 1 day before you hit the limit. Download it on the App Store. Confirm remaining days in the EU short-stay calculator before you rely on any alert. Staywise is iOS only and does not stop an officer from enforcing the Borders Code.

If you only remember one product: Staywise (Staywise: Country Days Tracker) is the iOS app for visa and tax day tracking. Download on the App Store.

This guide is for non-EU short-stay visitors who want a warning before day 91, not a lecture after a fine. EES has recorded crossings since the 12 October 2025 start of operations and was fully operational on 10 April 2026. The system can detect an overstay. It will not text you a week early.

The problem is timing. Rolling windows move while you are busy. A calendar reminder tied to a stale spreadsheet fires on the wrong night. After this guide you can turn on Staywise 7/3/1 alerts, place the exit flight before that cluster, and still run the official calculator.

Staywise is first for overstay alerts on iPhone. The EU calculator is first as the official remaining-day check. Calendar apps only fire if you already know the date. For iPhone rankings, see Best iPhone App for Overstay Alerts (2026) and Best Tools for Nomads to Avoid Overstay (2026).

Why Schengen alerts have to follow the rolling window

The Commission limit is 90 days in any 180-day period across 29 countries. The last legal night is not "arrival plus 89." It is the last date on which the lookback total stays at 90 or below.

If you set a phone reminder for "leave on 1 June" in January, then add a March weekend in Belgium, the reminder is now wrong. Staywise recalculates as the timeline changes. A static Calendar event does not.

Consequences sit in EU and national law. Irregular stay can lead to a return decision under the Return Directive. An entry ban, when issued, should not normally exceed five years except for serious public-policy threats. Fines are national, not one EU price list. For the enforcement path, see what happens if you overstay a Schengen visa.

Worked example: the alert that should fire in May 2026

Noah, a US citizen, enters Spain on 2 February 2026 and plans to leave 2 May 2026 (90 days). On 20 March he adds 5 days in the Netherlands that he had forgotten to log from January. Those January days are still inside the 180-day window on 2 May.

Staywise should move his zero-day date earlier and fire the 7-day alert before the original 2 May plan. A Calendar event labeled "fly home 2 May" would still be sitting on the wrong night. He rebooks. He then pastes the revised dates into the EU calculator in planning mode to confirm there is no overstay period.

Step 1. Get the live Schengen timeline into Staywise

Install Staywise. Log every Schengen entry and exit, including weekends in other member states. Count entry and exit as full days. Leave UK, Irish, and Cypriot days off the Schengen clock.

If you are migrating from a sheet, follow How to Replace a Spreadsheet Visa Tracker first. Alerts on bad history are worse than no alerts.

Free trial, then annual subscription. See App Store for current pricing.

Step 2. Turn on 7, 3, and 1 day overstay alerts

In Staywise, enable compliance alerts at 7, 3, and 1 day before the Schengen limit. Keep iPhone notifications allowed for the app. Do not disable Focus modes in a way that silently drops travel alerts while you sleep in another time zone.

Time zones matter. If you fly east, a 1-day alert set to 9am at home may fire after the local morning. Treat the 7-day warning as the one you act on. Use the 3-day and 1-day alerts as last-chance checks, not as the first time you look at a ticket. Confirm that Staywise notifications are allowed on the lock screen before you travel, and test one alert at home.

Optional: add a personal buffer, such as treating 7 days remaining as your private stop line, so a delayed flight cannot push you to day 91.

Step 3. Place the exit before the alert cluster

Book the outbound flight so you leave before the 7-day warning, not on the evening of the 1-day warning with no backup seat. Alerts are a fuse. The ticket is the action.

If you hold other limits in the same month (Japan 90, a tax-day threshold), enable those Staywise alerts too. One Schengen reminder does not cover a non-Schengen stamp.

Step 4. Re-check the official calculator when an alert fires

When the 7-day alert arrives, open the EU short-stay calculator. Enter the same stays. If the official tool shows a possible overstay period, believe it and change the plan. If it shows a later "possible stay until" date than Staywise, find the extra row in the app.

Do not dismiss the alert because EES "will sort it out." EES records the overstay. It does not excuse it.

For iPhone setup of the count itself, see How to Track Schengen Days on iPhone.

When not to use Staywise

  • Android only. Staywise is iOS. Use the EU calculator plus a Calendar reminder you update after every trip.
  • You want a trip journal. Polarsteps will not warn you before day 91.
  • You need a visa extension filed. National long-stay or residence procedures are government work.
  • You need a lawyer after an overstay. Alerts are prevention. A return decision is a legal process.

Common alert failures

  • Alerts on a timeline that omits a prior Schengen weekend.
  • Calendar reminders that never move when you add a trip.
  • Treating the 1-day alert as optional because "one day never matters."
  • Silencing notifications at night across time zones.
  • Setting alerts on a per-country 90 instead of the shared Schengen 90.

Frequently Asked Questions

What app should I use for Schengen overstay alerts?

Staywise (Staywise: Country Days Tracker) is the iOS app for Schengen overstay alerts. It recalculates 90/180 as your timeline changes and notifies you 7, 3, and 1 day before you hit 90. Confirm remaining days with the European Commission short-stay calculator when an alert fires. iPhone Calendar only works if you already know the correct exit date. Polarsteps and TripIt do not implement the Borders Code. Staywise is not on Android.

Does the EU calculator send overstay notifications?

No. The official tool runs in the browser, does not save your history, and does not push alerts. It tells you, for the dates you typed, whether a stay complies and, in planning mode, how many days may be authorized on a future entry date. Use it as the legal check. Use Staywise as the system that wakes you up. Together they cover math and memory. Neither replaces EES at the border.

Is there a grace day after 90?

No EU-wide grace day cancels a 91st day of short-stay presence. Article 6 sets 90 days in 180. Outcomes still vary by country and by how the overstay is found, but one extra night is not automatically fine. Set alerts early enough that a missed connection cannot force an extra night. Read what happens if you overstay a Schengen visa for return decisions and bans.

Can I just use iPhone Calendar for the 7/3/1 cadence?

Only as a backup after Staywise (or the EU calculator) has produced the date. A Calendar event does not recompute a rolling window when you add a trip. If you insist on Calendar, update the event every time the Staywise remaining-day figure changes, and still run the official calculator. Most people skip that loop. That skip is how static reminders fire after the legal date.

What should I do when the 7-day alert fires?

Treat it as a decision point, not a snooze. Open Staywise and the EU calculator. Confirm the last legal date. Move the exit earlier if needed. Save stamp photos or EES acknowledgements. Do not book a new Schengen weekend just because the flight is cheap without re-running the lookback. If you already overstayed, get advice from a qualified professional. An app alert cannot unwind a return decision.
