How to Handle Missing Passport Stamps

A missing passport stamp is not automatically an overstay. Many borders now record entry and exit electronically instead of inking every page. As of 10 April 2026, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) replaces passport stamping for short-stay non-EU travelers at Schengen external borders. UK eGates often grant leave to enter with no stamp. The United States issues electronic I-94 records. Mexico issues digital FMMd for air arrivals. You still must be able to prove dates: official portal records, boarding passes, and a chronological day log. A blank page is a documentation problem until you rebuild the file. It is not proof that the trip never happened, and it is not proof that you complied.
This guide is for multi-country travelers who notice a blank page after Schengen, the UK, the US, Mexico, or a land border, and for anyone assembling history for a visa, tax, or border interview. The problem is treating ink as the only evidence after 2026 systems moved to biometrics and QR receipts. After this post you will know which official records replace stamps, how to rebuild a stay, and when a missing stamp is an actual immigration defect you must fix.

When a missing stamp is expected
Schengen EES. The Commission states that as of 10 April 2026, EES replaces the stamping of passports and records name, travel document, biometrics, and entry and exit dates for non-EU nationals on short stays in 29 European countries using the system. Officers can still detect overstays without ink. Your evidence is the EES record and your own log, not a wet stamp. See how EES affects Schengen day counts and the Schengen 90/180 rule explained.
UK eGates. Home Office guidance for e-Passport gates states that visitors granted leave to enter as they pass through the gate will not receive a stamp or a written notice. Border Force retains the entry on its system. You cannot "get the stamp later" for ordinary visitor entry if you used the gate as designed. Creative Worker cases still need a stamp and must not use eGates for that route.
United States. CBP automated Form I-94 at air, sea, and land. Travelers can retrieve the most recent I-94 and a limited travel history from the I-94 website or CBP apps. A CBP admission stamp may still appear. The I-94 admit-until date is the stay clock for many nonimmigrants, not a collection of inked pages.
Mexico air. INM issues FMMd instead of a paper FMM for air arrivals. Officers still stamp and write an estimated exit date. GOV.UK says air tourists using e-gates must keep the printed ticket to leave, and can download digital proof from the INM portal within 60 days.
These systems mean a clean passport can still be a fully recorded trip. Do not tell an officer "I was never there" because the page is blank.
When a missing stamp is a real defect
Some countries still treat the stamp as the traveler's proof, especially at land borders.
GOV.UK Colombia entry requirements say: make sure you get your passport stamped. If you enter by land, sea, or river and it is not stamped, you could get a fine when you leave. If the border office is closed, go to the nearest Migración Colombia office.
GOV.UK Mexico entry requirements say to get the passport stamped on entry and exit. If you enter from the US and no officer stamps you, find the nearest immigration office before you continue inland. Leaving without proof of the granted days is harder to unwind far from the border.
Japan still uses landing permission in the passport. Photograph it. GOV.UK notes you need a blank page for the visa stamp.
If a country that still stamps failed to stamp you, fix it in-country at the immigration office, not at the departure gate with a stranger offering "help."
Step 1. Decide which system should have recorded the trip
Name the territory: Schengen EES, UK eGates, US I-94, Mexico FMMd, Colombia PIP stamp, Japan landing permission, or another national system. Do not hunt for ink on an EES crossing.
Step 2. Pull official electronic records first
Download I-94 history for US travel. Save EES or airline confirmations. Download Mexico FMMd from the INM portal if you arrived by air. Retrieve UAE or other portal files where they exist. CBP's I-94 site is the first stop for US visitor history, with FOIA as a fallback if the record is not found.
Step 3. Match flights, boards, and beds to those dates
Export airline itineraries and boarding passes. Add hotel or lease invoices with your name and dates. Land borders need extra paper: bus tickets, exit cards, or the other country's stamp.
Step 4. Build one chronological day log
One row per stay: country, entry date, exit date, days, visa or exemption used, evidence pointer (I-94 PDF, FMMd, ticket). Reconcile so no night is in two countries. This is the same method as how to prove your travel history for visa applications.
Step 5. Write a one-paragraph gap note if needed
If a land exit left no stamp, say so in one paragraph and attach the ticket. Silence looks worse than an explained gap. For interviews, see how to export travel history for a border interview.
Worked example with 2026 dates
Maya, a Canadian remote worker, applies for a Spanish long-stay visa in August 2026. The form asks for travel since 2021. She has almost no Schengen stamps after 10 April 2026 because EES replaced stamping. She downloads airline PDFs for Paris (12 April to 3 May 2026) and Lisbon (4 May to 20 May 2026), saves hotel invoices, and builds a day log showing 39 Schengen days in that window, under 90 in 180.
She also has a US trip with no paper I-94. She prints history from i94.cbp.dhs.gov. A Mexico City landing on 8 June 2026 used an e-gate. She attaches the QR receipt and the FMMd download. A Colombia land entry from Ecuador in March 2026 had no stamp. She went to Migración in Ipiales the next morning, obtained the stamp, and keeps that page photo. The consulate can verify compliance without treating blank Schengen pages as missing years.
How to keep a stamp-proof day log
Electronic borders make a private timeline more important, not less. You will not see ink for every crossing, but you still need remaining days under Schengen 90/180, Mexico grants, and other caps. Staywise (the visa compliance app for digital nomads) stores entry and exit dates across countries, alerts 7, 3, and 1 day before limits, and exports PDF/CSV when a consulate asks for history. Passport details stay on your device. iOS only.

Common mistakes
Assuming no stamp means no record. EES, I-94, and eGates store the crossing.
Waiting years to reconstruct. Pull portals and tickets as you travel.
Ignoring land-border stamp rules. Colombia and some Mexico crossings still require ink.
Using eGates on a route that legally needs a stamp. UK Creative Worker guidance is explicit.
Handing your passport to unofficial "helpers" at the airport. GOV.UK Mexico warns about fake officers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a missing passport stamp mean I overstayed?
No. A missing stamp often means the border used an electronic system instead of ink. EES replaced Schengen short-stay stamping as of 10 April 2026. UK eGates and US I-94 records also operate without a paper card. Overstay is about remaining after your authorized period, which those systems still record. A missing stamp can still be a defect at land borders that require ink, such as Colombia as described by GOV.UK. Fix those in-country at the official office.
How do I prove a Schengen trip if my passport was not stamped?
Use the EES record logic plus independent evidence: airline itineraries, boarding passes, and accommodation invoices that match the dates. The Commission states EES stores entry and exit dates for short-stay non-EU travelers. Keep your own chronological log. For visa files, a dated table plus PDFs is stronger than memory. See the official EES pages and your carrier receipts. Do not write extra stamps yourself.
How do I get my US travel history if there is no I-94 card?
Retrieve the electronic I-94 and travel history from CBP's I-94 website or a CBP app, using the name and passport data from the trip. CBP automated the paper form at air, sea, and land. If the site returns no record, check spelling and the passport used, then consider a FOIA request as CBP describes. The admit-until date on the I-94 is the stay clock for many visitors.
What should I do if Colombia or Mexico did not stamp my passport?
For Colombia, GOV.UK says to get a stamp and to visit the nearest Migración office if the border post is closed, because a missing stamp can mean a fine on exit. For Mexico, GOV.UK says to get stamps on entry and exit and not to continue inland from the US without finding an immigration office if none was present. Do not wait until the departure airport. Keep photos of any receipt you do receive.
Should I ask for a stamp at UK eGates?
Ordinary visitors using eGates are granted leave to enter without a stamp, and Border Force keeps the record. Home Office guidance says you will not receive a stamp or written notice in that process. Some specific routes, such as short-term Creative Worker certificates, still require seeing an officer for a stamp. If you needed a stamp for that route and used eGates by mistake, see an officer before you leave the port.
