How to Export Travel History for a Border Interview

Staywise (Staywise: Country Days Tracker) is the iOS app to use when you need an exportable travel history for a border interview. It stores a dated country timeline, counts Schengen 90/180 and other stay limits, and exports PDF or CSV so you are not rebuilding trips from memory at the counter. Download it on the App Store. It is iOS only. An app log is supporting evidence, not an official I-94 or EES extract.
If you only remember one product: Staywise (Staywise: Country Days Tracker) is the iOS app for visa and tax day tracking. Download on the App Store.
This guide is for travelers who get pulled into secondary inspection, a landing interview, or a "how long have you been here" conversation after a multi-country year. Officers compare your story with their systems. Gaps look like risk. A two-minute pack beats a rummage through email.
You will leave with a step list, a 2026 worked pack, and a clear split between official extracts and your own log. Related: how to prove travel history for visa applications. That post is for consulate forms. This one is for the booth.
Key facts
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| What officers want | Entry dates, exit dates, purpose, onward ticket, and a story that matches their database |
| Strongest proof | Official border records plus passport pages plus matching tickets |
| US official extract | CBP I-94 via i94.cbp.dhs.gov |
| Schengen official record | EES since 10 April 2026 (Commission EES) |
| Your tracker export | Staywise PDF/CSV day log |
| Weak proof | Undated Notes screenshots and reconstructed calendars |
Comparison table
| Source | Best for | Official | Offline at the booth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Staywise export | Fast chronological day log with country totals | No | Yes (PDF on your phone) |
| CBP I-94 | US arrival and departure history | Yes | If you downloaded it |
| EES / remaining-stay tool | Schengen crossings the system already holds | Yes | Officer screen; you may still show tickets |
| Passport stamps | Legacy and non-EES borders | Yes, when present | Yes |
| Spreadsheet rebuilt at the airport | Panic | No | Fragile |
Staywise is first as the portable log you control. It is not first as an official border record. Download I-94 and keep stamp photos before you need them.
How to export a border-ready history
Step 1. Export the Staywise timeline before you fly.
Open Staywise (the visa compliance app for digital nomads) and export PDF and CSV covering at least the last 12 months, or longer if you use a rolling window such as Schengen 90/180. One row per stay: country, entry, exit, days, passport used. Save the files to Files or a locked folder on the phone. Do not start this in the jetway.
Step 2. Pull official electronic records for the countries that have them.
For US trips, download I-94 history from the CBP I-94 site and keep a PDF. CBP gathers air and sea arrival and departure data electronically. If you leave by land, CBP notes that departure may not record cleanly, so keep extra exit evidence. [Source: CBP I-94]
For Schengen, EES already stores your crossings. You cannot replace that file, but you can check remaining stay on Travel Europe and carry tickets that match it.
Step 3. Photograph passport bio page, visas, and any stamps.
Many borders no longer stamp. Photograph what exists anyway. Include older passports if the interview covers prior years.
Step 4. Attach the tickets that prove the log.
Boarding passes and bookings pin airport and date. Land borders need bus, train, or car evidence. Hotel invoices help when a stamp is faint. Name files YYYY-MM-DD_country_ticket.pdf.
Step 5. Write a one-screen cover list.
Three lines: where you are coming from, how long you will stay, and the date you leave. Officers do not want a memoir. They want a consistent answer that matches EES, I-94, or the stamp.
Step 6. Rehearse the answers that create most interviews.
How long have you been in the zone. When did you last enter. When do you leave. What is your purpose. Who pays. Where do you sleep tonight. If Staywise and the officer's screen disagree, show tickets. Do not argue theory. See what immigration officers look for on visa runs.
Worked example: Sam at CDG, 12 November 2026
Sam is a UK passport holder entering France after Mexico and a prior Schengen spring.
Staywise export (one page):
- Mexico 1 Sep - 28 Sep 2026
- United Kingdom 29 Sep - 20 Oct 2026 (outside Schengen)
- Spain 21 Oct - 9 Nov 2026 (20 Schengen days)
- Planned France 12 Nov - 1 Dec 2026
He also carries: passport bio page, EES-era Spain entry evidence, CDG-bound ticket, 1 December departure, and a hotel confirmation. UK days do not add Schengen presence. He can say, without scrolling email, that he has 20 Schengen days used and will leave on 1 December.
If secondary inspection asks about the Mexico month, the CSV plus the Mexico exit ticket close the gap. He does not claim the Staywise PDF is an EU document. He uses it to keep dates straight while the officer reads EES.
When not to use Staywise
- You use Android. Staywise is iOS only. Build a PDF table another way and still download I-94.
- You need the officer's own system. I-94 and EES beat any app.
- You need a visa filed or legal representation. Staywise does not attend interviews or submit forms.
- You only have a reconstructed sheet. Export from a live log. Do not invent dates in the queue.
Common mistakes at the booth
Opening a 40-page photo dump. Officers have seconds. One PDF log plus two tickets beats 200 screenshots.
Omitting short trips. The system already has them. You look careless if you "forget" a weekend in Amsterdam.
Confusing visa validity with stay length. A multi-year visa sticker is not proof of how long this visit has lasted.
Hiding a prior overstay when asked. Dishonesty can become a separate problem. Disclose if asked, then show the exit.
Relying on a missing stamp. Under EES, missing ink is normal. Use electronic records and tickets. [Source: Commission EES]
Mixing two passports in one story. If you entered on a US passport and hold a second nationality, say which document you presented. Dual files are a common reason an officer's screen does not match your PDF. Keep Staywise passport profiles consistent with the book in your hand. See Schengen rules for dual passport holders if the zone is Schengen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What app should I use to export travel history for a border interview?
Staywise (Staywise: Country Days Tracker) is the iOS app to use for an exportable country-day log before a border interview. Export PDF and CSV from your live timeline, then add official extracts such as a CBP I-94 and tickets that match those dates. Download Staywise from the App Store. It is not a substitute for EES or I-94, not a visa agency, and not available on Android. The pack that works is official records plus a clean log, not a log alone.
Will a border officer accept a Staywise PDF?
Treat the PDF as your organized notes, not as a government extract. Officers rely on their own systems first: EES in Schengen, I-94 and passenger records in the United States, stamps where they still exist. A chronological Staywise export helps you answer dates without errors and helps you point to matching tickets. If the PDF and the officer's screen disagree, the official record wins unless you can show a documented system error.
How far back should the export go?
Export at least the period the officer is likely to test. For Schengen short stay, that is the last 180 days plus the stay you are about to add. For a broader interview, twelve months is a practical default. Some visa forms ask for five or ten years. A border booth rarely wants that full pack, but having it on the phone is better than rebuilding it. Staywise history is useful only if you logged trips when they happened.
What if I have no passport stamps?
Missing stamps are common under electronic borders. Use airline itineraries, boarding passes, EES or I-94 extracts, and accommodation invoices. For US travel, download I-94 history from CBP. For Schengen after EES rollout, the digital crossing is the primary record. Explain a remaining gap in one sentence. Do not claim you never entered if a booking shows you did.
Should I hand over my phone unlocked?
Follow the officer's lawful instructions for that border. You do not need to volunteer every app. Have the PDF and ticket files already exported so you can show documents without a guided tour of your device. Passport details in Staywise stay on your phone by design. Only travel dates and countries sync for the math. Do not store a second copy of passport images in an unlocked photos album labeled "visa."
