How Long Can US Citizens Stay in Singapore

How Long Can US Citizens Stay in Singapore

US citizens do not need a Singapore visa for business or social visits. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) decides the stay at the checkpoint and issues an electronic Visit Pass (e-Pass). The US State Department states that tourist or business visits of up to 90 days do not require a visa. The legal end date is the last day printed on the e-Pass, not a blog's 90-day assumption. Submit the free SG Arrival Card within three days before arrival, including the arrival day. A passport valid for at least six months is required. Short-term visit passes do not allow employment.

This guide is for US passport holders using Singapore as a hub, a food-and-transit stop, or a longer remote-work base. The problem is treating 90 days as automatic and ignoring the e-Pass email. Singapore no longer stamps passports for this grant. If you miss the email, you can miss the exit date.

After reading, you will know the visa-free position, how the e-Pass works, SGAC, extension rules, and a 2026 date example.

Do US citizens need a visa for Singapore?

The Embassy of Singapore in Washington states that US passport holders (regular, official, and diplomatic) do not require a visa to enter Singapore for business or social visit purposes. They must still meet ICA entry requirements. [Source: Singapore Embassy Washington]

ICA's visa-required list does not include the United States. A visa is pre-entry permission to travel and seek entry. It is not the stay. ICA officers grant an immigration pass at the checkpoint. Possession of a visa never guaranteed entry even for visa-required nationalities. [Source: ICA visa requirements]

The e-Pass is the stay limit

From 11 March 2022, foreign visitors are notified digitally of their Visit Pass by email. There is no passport endorsement. The e-Pass states the period of stay granted and the last day allowed. Use a real email address on the SG Arrival Card. Retrieve the record later via ICA's e-Pass enquiry portal.

ICA is explicit: the period of stay is not tied to visa validity. Short-term travelers must not stay beyond Visit Pass validity. That sentence is the whole compliance job. Plan around the date in the email, even if you expected 90 days and received 30.

ICA also requires sufficient cash and proof of onward travel (tickets, visas for the next country). You present biometrics at clearance. Failure can mean denial of entry.

SG Arrival Card

All travelers must submit the SG Arrival Card within three days before arriving, including the day of arrival, except people transiting without immigration clearance and certain residents at land checkpoints. Submission is free via the official SGAC e-Service or the MyICA app. ICA warns that paid third-party sites are not official. Failure to submit SGAC can mean denial of entry.

SGAC is not a visa. It does not add days. It is a pre-arrival declaration.

Work, study, and longer stays

ICA states that travelers on a Short-Term Visit Pass are not permitted to engage in any business, professional, or paid employment activities in Singapore. Overstaying is a punishable offence. [Source: ICA entering Singapore]

The extension page repeats that STVP holders shall not engage in employment (paid or unpaid), business, profession, or occupation unless they hold a valid Ministry of Manpower work pass or are doing listed work-pass-exempt activities. [Source: ICA extend visit pass]

Remote work for a non-Singapore employer while you travel is a gray area many nomads use carefully. It does not replace an Employment Pass, S Pass, or other MOM product if you are working in Singapore for a Singapore entity. See remote work tourist visa legality.

How to extend a Singapore visit pass

Step 1. Retrieve your e-Pass and confirm the last allowed day. Do not guess 90 days.

Step 2. Submit an STVP extension online when 14 days or less remain. Walk-in applications are not accepted.

Step 3. Upload the travel-document biodata page and the Disembarkation/Embarkation number from SGAC. Add extra evidence if ICA asks.

Step 4. Wait for the email outcome. ICA says processing is usually within five working days. Some cases take longer.

Step 5. If approved, pay any fee due. ICA charges an extension fee of S$40 if the extension takes total stay to 90 days or more from entry, and again at each further 90-day block. Depart on the current e-Pass date if payment lapses or the application is refused.

US citizens are not on ICA's local-sponsor nationality list. Approval is still discretionary. Family ties in Singapore, medical treatment, and the reason for more time all matter.

Worked example with concrete dates

Priya, a US citizen, flies into Changi on 8 October 2026. She submitted SGAC on 6 October. ICA emails an e-Pass the same evening: last day of stay 5 January 2027 (90 days). Priya saves the PDF. That date, not a spreadsheet "90 nights" formula, is the legal limit.

If ICA had granted 30 days instead, the last day would be about 6 November 2026. A 75-day coworking booking would then be illegal unless an extension was approved. Priya would apply online from 24 October onward (14 days or less remaining), not after the pass expired.

Priya does not take a paid role with a Singapore company on the visit pass. If she needs Singapore as an employment base, she applies for the correct MOM pass, not a second tourist landing after a Johor weekend.

How to track Singapore visit-pass days without a spreadsheet

The e-Pass date is easy to lose in email. Staywise (the visa compliance app for digital nomads) logs your Singapore entry and counts down to the last day you record from the e-Pass. Alerts fire 7, 3, and 1 day before that date. Multi-country timelines keep Singapore separate from Malaysia, Thailand, or Schengen. Passport details stay on your device. Available on iOS.

Common mistakes US travelers make in Singapore

Assuming 90 days without reading the e-Pass. The email date wins.

Paying a third-party SGAC site. Official submission is free.

Working on a visit pass. ICA and MOM treat that as unlawful employment unless a work pass or listed exemption applies.

Using a passport with under six months validity. ICA requires six months for non-Singapore passports.

Missing the extension window. Apply online with 14 days or less remaining, before expiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can US citizens stay in Singapore without a visa?

US citizens do not need a visa for business or social visits. The US State Department describes tourist or business visits of up to 90 days. ICA issues an e-Pass at the checkpoint, and that last-day date is the legal stay. Officers can grant a shorter period. Retrieve the e-Pass email and plan around it. Submit SGAC first and carry a passport with at least six months validity.

Do US citizens need a Singapore visa in 2026?

Not for ordinary tourism or business visits. The Singapore Embassy in Washington and ICA's visa-required list both treat regular US passports as visa-exempt for those purposes. You still need SGAC, a six-month passport, funds, and onward travel. Work, study, and long-term residence use different passes. A visa, when required for other nationalities, is not itself the stay length.

What is the SG Arrival Card?

SGAC is Singapore's free pre-arrival digital card. Submit it within three days before arrival, including the arrival day, on ICA's official site or MyICA. It is not a visa and does not add stay days. ICA says travelers who fail to submit it may be denied entry. Ignore paid copycat websites. Use a real email so the e-Pass can reach you.

Can I work remotely in Singapore as a tourist?

A Short-Term Visit Pass does not allow business, professional, or paid employment in Singapore unless you hold a MOM work pass or you are doing a listed work-pass-exempt activity. Remote work for a foreign employer is a gray area and does not replace an Employment Pass if your activity is Singapore employment. Do not invoice Singapore clients on a visit pass and hope an extension covers it.

Can I extend a Singapore visit pass, and what if I overstay?

Yes, you can apply online for an STVP extension when 14 days or less remain. Approval is discretionary. ICA may charge S$40 when total stay from entry reaches 90 days or another 90-day block. Overstaying is a punishable offence. Leave on or before the e-Pass last day if the extension is refused or unpaid. Keep the e-Pass PDF as proof of the date you were actually granted.
