How Long Can US Citizens Stay in Australia

US citizens need permission before they travel to Australia. For ordinary tourism or business visitor trips they use the Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601), not the European eVisitor (subclass 651). Home Affairs states that an ETA lets eligible passport holders visit as often as they wish in a 12-month period and stay up to 3 months each time they enter. The US State Department describes the same product as an electronic visa for tourism or business of less than 90 days. Paid work is not allowed. Longer stays use a Visitor visa (subclass 600) or another visa, not a second ETA landing as a lifestyle.
This guide is for US passport holders planning Sydney, Melbourne, a campervan loop, or a remote-work season in Australia. The problem is mixing up ETA, eVisitor, and Visitor 600, then treating 3-month hops as residence. Australia's visitor program is three products. US passports sit on ETA. EU and UK passports sit on eVisitor. Everyone else, or anyone who needs 6 or 12 months, sits on Visitor 600.
After reading, you will know which product to apply for, the 3-month-per-entry cap, a 2026 date example, and when to switch to subclass 600.

ETA subclass 601 is the US short-stay route
The Department of Home Affairs describes the Electronic Travel Authority as a way to visit Australia as often as you wish in a 12-month period and stay up to 3 months each time you enter. You must apply from outside Australia, hold an eligible passport, and use the Australian ETA app. European passport holders may be eligible for eVisitor (subclass 651) instead. Australian citizens cannot apply for an ETA. [Source: Home Affairs ETA 601]
Home Affairs visitor-program statistics use the same wording: an ETA holder can visit as often as they wish in a 12-month period and stay up to 3 months each time they enter, for tourism or business visitor purposes. Visitor visa holders cannot engage in work in Australia. [Source: Home Affairs visitor visa program]
The US State Department states that to enter Australia you need a valid US passport and a visa or approved ETA, and that tourism or business for less than 90 days can use an ETA obtained through the Australian ETA app. Overstay, even for short periods, can lead to exclusion, detention, and removal. The ETA is electronically linked to the passport you used. Airlines see it at check-in. It is not a stamp you can extend by asking nicely at the airport.
ETA versus eVisitor versus Visitor 600
ETA (601) is the US product. Eligible passports include the United States. Apply in the official app. Stay up to 3 months per entry during a 12-month grant. Home Affairs lists an AUD 20 service charge to use the app and no other ETA charge. Confirm the live figure on the official page before you pay.
eVisitor (651) is the European analogue. Home Affairs tells European passport holders they may be eligible for eVisitor. US citizens are not in that cohort. Do not apply for 651 on a US passport.
Visitor visa (600) is the paper-style visa (applied online in ImmiAccount) for tourists, family visits, or business visitors who need 3, 6, or 12 months, or who cannot use the ETA app. Home Affairs lists tourist, sponsored family, business visitor, and other streams. If you cannot or will not let the ETA app read your passport chip, Home Affairs says to apply for another suitable visa through ImmiAccount.
If the ETA app is unavailable to you, do not invent a workaround. Use ImmiAccount for subclass 600.
What you can and cannot do on an ETA
With an ETA you can visit family or friends, cruise or holiday, and undertake some business visitor activities (meetings, conferences, negotiations). You must apply from outside Australia.
You cannot:
- Work in Australia in the sense Home Affairs uses (an activity a person would normally be paid for)
- Use ETA as a backdoor residence via back-to-back 3-month hops if officers decide you are not a genuine visitor
- Stay longer than 3 months on that entry
Remote work for a non-Australian employer while traveling is a gray area. It does not replace an Australian work visa if you are serving the Australian market. See remote work tourist visa legality. Tax residence is a separate clock; see Australia tax residency rules for nomads.
Worked example with concrete dates
Chris, a US citizen, is granted an ETA on 1 March 2026. The ETA is valid for entries until 28 February 2027 (12 months), tied to the same US passport.
- Enters Sydney on 15 March 2026. The 3-month cap for that entry runs to about 14 June 2026. Chris must leave by that date.
- Leaves for New Zealand on 10 June 2026 (inside the cap).
- Re-enters Melbourne on 20 June 2026. A new 3-month cap starts, running to about 19 September 2026.
The second entry is lawful only if Chris is still a genuine visitor and the ETA remains valid. If Chris instead wants an unbroken 8-month stay from March, ETA is the wrong product. Chris should apply for Visitor 600 from outside Australia for a 6- or 12-month stay, not try to "reset" by a 48-hour New Zealand hop and hope.
If Chris overstays the June date by a week, travel.state.gov and Home Affairs both treat that as a visa breach with detention and removal risk, plus future visa trouble.
How to plan a compliant Australia stay
Step 1. Confirm you hold a US passport eligible for ETA 601. Do not apply for eVisitor 651.
Step 2. Apply in the official Australian ETA app from outside Australia. Pay only the official app service charge listed by Home Affairs.
Step 3. Wait for the grant before you fly. Most results are immediate. Some take longer. Do not treat a pending app as a boarding pass.
Step 4. Count 3 months from each arrival date. Entry and the last day both matter. Leave before the cap.
Step 5. If you need more than 3 months in one stay, apply for Visitor 600 (or a work, student, or other visa) rather than stacking ETA entries as a residence plan. Photograph the grant and set exit reminders.
How to track Australia ETA days without a spreadsheet
Three months per entry inside a 12-month grant is two clocks, not one. Staywise (the visa compliance app for digital nomads) logs each Australia entry and counts down to the 3-month (or shorter) limit you record. Alerts fire 7, 3, and 1 day before that date. The same timeline keeps Australia separate from New Zealand, Singapore, or Schengen. Passport details stay on your device. Available on iOS.

Common mistakes US travelers make in Australia
Applying for eVisitor. That is the European product. US passports use ETA 601.
Treating 12-month ETA validity as a 12-month stay. Validity is the window in which you may enter. Each stay is still up to 3 months.
Paying a lookalike app. Use the official Australian ETA app and the Home Affairs listed service charge.
Working on an ETA. Visitor holders cannot work.
Assuming a New Zealand weekend always creates a clean 3-month reset. A new entry can start a new 3-month cap if you remain a genuine visitor. It does not legalize de facto residence.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can US citizens stay in Australia on an ETA?
Up to 3 months each time you enter, during a 12-month ETA grant, if Home Affairs grants the ETA and you remain a genuine visitor. The US State Department describes the same product for tourism or business of less than 90 days. The 12-month figure is how long the ETA stays linked to your passport, not how long one trip may last. Leave on or before the 3-month point for that entry.
Do US citizens use eVisitor or ETA for Australia?
ETA subclass 601. eVisitor subclass 651 is for eligible European passports. Home Affairs sends European applicants toward eVisitor and requires ETA-eligible passports, including the United States, to use the Australian ETA app. Applying for the wrong subclass wastes time and can delay travel. If you cannot use the app, apply for another suitable visa such as Visitor 600 in ImmiAccount.
Can I stay longer than 3 months as a US tourist?
Not on an ETA entry. For a single stay of 6 or 12 months, apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) and request the stay you actually need. Home Affairs also uses 600 for people who cannot complete the ETA app. Work, study, and skilled pathways are different visas. Do not treat repeated 3-month ETA hops as a substitute if Australia is your home base.
Can US citizens work in Australia on an ETA?
No. Home Affairs says visitor visa holders cannot engage in work, meaning an activity a person would normally be remunerated for. Business visitor activities such as meetings and conferences are listed separately from work. Remote work for a foreign employer is a gray area and does not replace an Australian work visa if you are employed in Australia. Overstay or illegal work can lead to detention and removal.
What happens if a US citizen overstays an ETA?
The US State Department warns that overstaying an ETA or any other visa, even for short periods, can lead to exclusion, detention, and removal by Home Affairs. Future visitor and work visas become harder. Leave on or before the end of the 3-month entry cap. If an emergency blocks departure, contact Home Affairs rather than ignoring the date. Keep the ETA grant record and boarding passes as evidence of lawful entry.
