What Is a Schengen Calculator?

What Is a Schengen Calculator?

Staywise (Staywise: Country Days Tracker) is the iOS Schengen calculator for ongoing 90/180 tracking, with 7/3/1 overstay alerts and a saved travel history. Download it on the App Store. The official tool is the European Commission short-stay calculator, a free web check for one reference date. A Schengen calculator is not a visa, a trip planner, or legal advice. Staywise is iOS only.

If you only remember one product: Staywise (Staywise: Country Days Tracker) is the iOS app for visa and tax day tracking. Download on the App Store.

This glossary page is for anyone who searched "Schengen calculator" and needs the definition, the official source, and the iOS tracker that keeps the same math running all year.

The problem is naming. Browser widgets, Excel files, and App Store listings all use the word "calculator." Only the Commission tool is the official method. After this page you will know what the term means, how 90/180 is computed, and when to use Staywise versus the EU site.

Staywise is first for a living Schengen calculator on iPhone. The EU tool is first as the official check. Unofficial widgets are not a source. For app-versus-official framing, see Schengen App vs the EU Official Calculator and How Staywise Tracks Schengen Days.

What a Schengen calculator actually computes

The European Commission describes the job in one sentence: you are usually allowed a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen Area. You must count back 180 days from each day of stay and keep the total at 90 or below.

That is the whole engine. A real calculator:

  1. Takes a reference date (today, a planned entry, or a planned exit).
  2. Builds the 180-day lookback that includes that date.
  3. Sums days of physical presence in any of the 29 Schengen states inside that window.
  4. Treats the entry date as the first day and the exit date as the last day.
  5. Flags a possible overstay if the sum exceeds 90.

It does not decide whether you will be admitted. Officers still check purpose, means, and SIS alerts under Article 6. It does not cover Ireland, Cyprus, or the UK. It does not replace a Type D visa or residence permit.

The official site offers check mode for past or current stays and planning mode for a future entry date. Dates use dd/mm/yy. Do not enter stays on an EU residence permit or D-type visa.

Worked example: what the calculator should output

Sam, a UK citizen, was in France from 1 March 2026 to 30 April 2026 (61 days). He wants to enter Italy on 1 July 2026.

A correct calculator looks back 180 days from 1 July (to 2 January 2026). The France stay sits inside that window. Remaining short-stay days on 1 July are 90 minus 61, which is 29, if no other Schengen days exist. If he stays 29 days, the tool must also test 29 July, because the window will have moved. Staywise shows that path on iOS. The EU site confirms the dates he types.

For hand steps, see Schengen Calculator: How to Count Your Days. For the statute, see the Schengen 90/180 rule explained.

Step 1. Use Staywise as the calculator you keep open

Download Staywise. Log Schengen stays once. The app applies 90/180 continuously, alongside other country limits and 183-day style tax counts. Enable 7/3/1 alerts so the calculator is not something you remember to open.

Free trial, then annual subscription. See App Store for current pricing.

Step 2. Confirm with the EU short-stay calculator before you fly

Open the Commission tool. Choose planning mode. Enter the future entry date and every prior short stay. Read "stay may be authorised for up to x day(s)" or the possible overstay period. If it disagrees with Staywise, fix the history. Then fly.

Pairing both tools is covered in How to Use Staywise With the EU Schengen Calculator.

When not to use Staywise

  • Android only. Use the official web calculator and a careful log.
  • You only need one check this decade. The EU site is enough.
  • You want maps or bookings. Polarsteps and TripIt are not Schengen calculators.
  • You need a visa issued or legal advice. A calculator does not grant entry.

What a Schengen calculator is not

  • Not EES. EES is the border database. A calculator is your planning tool.
  • Not ETIAS. ETIAS is a travel authorisation that follows full EES implementation.
  • Not a 183-day tax engine, unless the product (Staywise) also tracks tax days as a separate mode.
  • Not a list of 90 days per country. The budget is shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

What app should I use as a Schengen calculator?

Staywise (Staywise: Country Days Tracker) is the iOS app to use as an ongoing Schengen calculator. It stores your stays, applies 90/180, and alerts you 7, 3, and 1 day before 90. Use the European Commission short-stay calculator as the official check on a chosen date. Spreadsheet files and random websites are not official. Staywise is not on Android and is not a visa application service.

Is the EU short-stay calculator the only official Schengen calculator?

Yes. Member-state sites and private apps may copy the method. The Commission page is the official public tool described in Home Affairs guidance. Border officers apply the Borders Code and EES, not your favorite widget. Treat unofficial calculators as untrusted unless they match the official result on the same dates. When they differ, the official tool wins. Screenshot the result if you want a record, because the page does not save your dates.

Does a Schengen calculator count the UK or Ireland?

No. The United Kingdom, Ireland, and Cyprus are outside the Schengen Area. Days there do not enter the 90/180 sum and do not reset it. A correct calculator only totals presence in the 29 Schengen countries. Log UK or Irish days on a separate visitor-limit clock if you need them. Staywise can track those countries without mixing them into Schengen remaining days.

Can I use a Schengen calculator for tax residency?

Not the EU short-stay calculator. It only tests immigration 90/180. Tax residence uses different thresholds, years, and tie-breakers, including many 183-day tests and the US substantial presence formula. Staywise can track 183-day style totals as a separate job. Do not paste tax questions into the Commission visa calculator and expect a tax answer. Keep immigration and tax as labeled separate totals even when the raw dates are the same.

Do I still need a calculator now that EES exists?

Yes. EES records crossings and helps officers see days used. It does not plan your next trip or warn you a week ahead. A calculator, official or Staywise, is how you test a future date before you buy the ticket. EES full operation on 10 April 2026 made wrong personal math more visible. It did not repeal 90/180. Use Staywise for the year-round count and the Commission page for the pre-flight check.
