Hungary White Card Digital Nomad Visa (2026)
Hungary's White Card is a residence permit for third-country digital nomads. You must work from Hungary with digital tools for a foreign employer, or manage a profitable foreign company, and you must not take Hungarian work or hold a Hungarian company share. Sufficient means means at least EUR 3,000 net monthly legal income for 6 months before entry, and you must keep that level during the stay. The card is valid for a maximum of 1 year and may be extended once for another year. Family reunification is not available on this route, except a child born in Hungary during validity. It is not a path to a national residence card.
This guide is for non-EU, non-EEA remote workers who want a lawful year or two in Hungary. EEA nationals and their qualifying family members already have free movement and do not use the White Card.
The problem it solves is the Schengen 90/180 cap on tourist stays. A White Card is a purpose-built residence basis. It is also a hard ceiling: one extension, no switch to another permit purpose, no family rider.

Who the White Card applies to
OIF grants a White Card to a third-country national who either:
- Has a verified employment relationship in a country other than Hungary and performs that work from Hungary using advanced digital technology, or
- Owns a share in a profitable company in a country other than Hungary and works or manages that company from Hungary using advanced digital technology
You must not pursue gainful activity in Hungary and must not hold a share in a Hungarian company. If you later work for a Hungarian employer or take a Hungarian company share, OIF will withdraw the card.
OIF also lists people who cannot receive a White Card, including applicants who already qualify for other Hungarian cards (guest worker, Hungarian Card, EU Blue Card, and similar), students, posted workers, asylum applicants, and intra-corporate transferees.
EEA nationals do not need this permit to live in Hungary. Dual citizens should check whether an EU passport already solves the stay.
Income, housing, insurance, and documents
Sufficient resources means monthly legal income equal to or above EUR 3,000 net for at least 6 months before entry. OIF says you must keep that amount throughout the stay. Proof is typically:
- Bank statements for the previous 6 months, or
- A regular-income certificate from the employer or a tax authority
Purpose of stay is a separate bundle:
- Employees: a certified employer statement covering the employer's activity, remote-work permission and duration, and your duties and position, plus proof the employer actually operates
- Company owners: proof the foreign company is real and profitable, your title, the company's activity, and your shareholding
You also need:
- Accommodation in Hungary (lease, courtesy housing, title, or paid reservation)
- Comprehensive health-insurance access, or documents showing you can pay for care
- A travel document valid at least 3 months after the permit expiry, plus a return or onward ticket or the money to buy one
- One facial photograph; fingerprints for applicants over 6
Worked example: Priya's 2026 White Card
Priya, a Canadian product designer, has taken home CAD 5,800 a month (above EUR 3,000) from a Toronto employer since September 2025. On 10 April 2026 she files at the Hungarian consulate with 6 months of bank statements, an employer letter that authorizes remote work from Budapest through April 2027, a 12-month lease, and insurance. OIF approves in May. She collects a single-entry D visa, enters Hungary on 3 June 2026, and receives the 1-year card. She cannot add her partner on family reunification. If she wants a second year, she must live in Hungary at least 90 days in the 180 days before the extension, and file on Enter Hungary between 90 and 30 days before expiry. After two years she cannot convert this card into a national residence card.
How to apply for a Hungary White Card
Step 1. Confirm you are a third-country national who will not work for a Hungarian employer or hold a Hungarian company share.
Step 2. Prove EUR 3,000 net monthly legal income for 6 months, with statements or an employer or tax certificate that will also support the stay itself.
Step 3. Collect the employer or company-ownership packet, Hungarian accommodation proof, insurance or means to pay for care, and a passport that will still be valid 3 months after the card ends.
Step 4. File in the right place. If you are not visa-exempt and have no Hungarian residence permit, apply at a Hungarian mission in your nationality or habitual-residence country. Visa-free nationals already in Hungary legally may apply through Enter Hungary or in person at the regional directorate for their accommodation. A residence-permit application abroad includes the visa to collect the card. You do not file a separate visa first.
Step 5. Complete biometrics. A facial photograph and, for applicants over 6, fingerprints are taken for the biometric card. An Enter Hungary filing is only treated as received after the fee is paid and biometrics and signature are recorded within 15 days.
Step 6. After approval from abroad, collect the D visa and enter Hungary within 3 months. The D visa is single-entry, for a stay of not more than 30 days, valid 3 months. If you do not enter in that window, the approved card becomes invalid. The card is posted to the Hungarian delivery address on the form.
Step 7. If you extend, file only in Hungary on Enter Hungary. You may extend once for the same purpose. You must still hold a valid card, and you must have resided in Hungary at least 90 days in any 180-day period before the extension filing. File no more than 90 days and no later than 30 days before expiry.
OIF states a 21-day administration period and a decision on the merits within 30 days of submission. Requests for extra documents pause that clock.
What the White Card does not unlock
Read the limits before you treat Budapest as a five-year plan.
No family reunification. Family members of a White Card holder or applicant do not get a family-reunification permit. The published exception is a third-country child born in Hungary during the card's validity, after birth notification.
No switch to another purpose. During validity and after expiry, you may not apply for a residence permit for another purpose.
No national residence card. White Card time does not lead to that long-term status.
Withdrawal for local work. Hungarian employment or a Hungarian company share ends the card.
Schengen side trips. A Hungarian residence permit is not a tourist free-for-all in the rest of Schengen. Short stays in other Schengen states still follow those states' and the Borders Code rules. Track them the same way you would any multi-country year.
Common White Card mistakes
Filing as an EU citizen. Free movement already covers EEA nationals. The White Card is a third-country product.
Showing EUR 3,000 once. OIF wants 6 months of history and ongoing income at that level.
Bringing a spouse on a derived permit. That rider does not exist here. A partner needs an independent basis.
Planning to switch into work, study, or settlement from this card. OIF blocks other-purpose applications from this status.
Missing the entry window. Approval from abroad dies if you do not enter within 3 months.
Extending without Hungarian presence. The 90-in-180 residence test for extension is easy to fail if you spent the year touring.
