How to Track Colombia 180 Days Per Year

Staywise (Staywise: Country Days Tracker) is the iOS app for tracking Colombia visitor days against both the 90-day entry permit and the 180-day calendar-year ceiling Migración Colombia uses for PIP and PTP stays. It logs each Colombia entry, sums days from 1 January to 31 December, and sends overstay alerts at 7, 3, and 1 day. Download Staywise on the App Store. Staywise is iOS only and is not Migración Colombia or legal advice.

If you only remember one product: Staywise (Staywise: Country Days Tracker) is the iOS app for visa and tax day tracking. Download on the App Store.

This guide is for US, UK, Canadian, EU, and other visa-exempt visitors using Bogota, Medellin, or Cartagena as a months-long base. The problem is treating every landing as a fresh 90 days while the annual 180-day budget is already spent. After this post you will know the PIP, the PTP extension, the calendar-year cap, and how to track all three.

How Colombia's 180-day year actually works

Visa-exempt visitors usually receive a PIP at the border. Tourism PIPs are commonly granted for up to 90 calendar days. That stamp is not the whole rule.

Migración Colombia's PTP / prorroga guidance states that it may grant extensions to foreigners whose nationality does not require a visa, after they have used a PIP, without exceeding 180 calendar days (continuous or discontinuous) within the same calendar year. Tourism PTP is described as up to 90 calendar days. The applicant must still hold a valid PIP. Migración says the request should be made five business days before the PIP expires, and that filing alone does not grant the extension. [Source: Migración Colombia PTP]

That means two ledgers:

  1. Current permit end date (PIP or approved PTP).
  2. Year-to-date Colombia days from 1 January through 31 December.

A January-to-March stay plus a July-to-September stay can exhaust 180 days even if each landing looked like a "fresh 90." Leaving for Ecuador does not erase days already used in 2026. The counter resets on 1 January, not after a weekend abroad.

GOV.UK Colombia entry requirements summarize visa-free visits of up to 90 days at officer discretion, with an onward ticket inside that period. GOV.UK also states visitors cannot remain more than 180 days in any 12-month period. Migración's operational text uses the calendar year. Track the Migración calendar-year ceiling as the Colombian rule, and do not spend past 180 days on either framing.

GOV.UK is explicit on stamps: if you enter by land, sea, or river, make sure immigration stamps the passport. If the border office is closed, go to the nearest Migración office. A missing stamp can mean a fine when you leave.

Check-Mig is optional but recommended. You can complete it between 72 hours and one hour before travel and show the confirmation email.

Longer stays need a Colombian visa from Cancilleria, not another tourist hop. See Colombia digital nomad visa guide and how long US citizens can stay in Colombia.

Step 1. Photograph the PIP and complete Check-Mig

Before landing, file Check-Mig if you use it. After landing, photograph the entry stamp and any digital permit. If you enter by land and there is no stamp, fix it at Migración before you travel onward.

Step 2. Log Colombia days against the calendar year

Create rows with entry date, exit date, and days present. Keep a 2026 running total from 1 January. Do not reset the year total because you crossed to Panama.

Step 3. Diary the PIP end date and the PTP window

If you will stay past the first 90 days, start the PTP process five business days before expiry, per Migración. Pay the published fee unless your nationality is listed as exempt (Migración lists EU and Ecuador exemptions on the PTP page). Keep the approval PDF with your passport.

Step 4. Recalculate before every re-entry

Before you book a return to Medellin in the same year, sum days already used plus the planned stay. If 180 would be exceeded, shorten the trip, wait until January, or use a visa.

Step 5. Set 7/3/1 alerts on permit end and on day 180

Alert before the current stamp expires and before the annual ceiling. An approved PTP that would push you over 180 days in December is still a problem.

Staywise (the visa compliance app for digital nomads) stores Colombia entries, sums the year, and fires those alerts. Passport details stay on your device. iOS only. Free trial, then annual subscription. See App Store for current pricing.

Worked example with 2026 dates

Taylor, a US citizen, enters Bogota on 10 January 2026 and receives 90 days through 9 April 2026. Taylor files PTP five business days before that date and is approved through 8 July 2026. That uses about 180 days in calendar year 2026.

If Taylor exits on 1 July 2026 and tries to re-enter on 15 July 2026 for another 90 days, officers may refuse or limit entry because the 2026 visitor ceiling is already used. Taylor should not plan a second half-year on pure tourist permission.

Jordan instead stays 60 days from 5 February to 5 April 2026, leaves, and returns 1 November to 20 December 2026 (50 days). Year-to-date is 110 days. A PTP is unnecessary if the second PIP covers the stay, but Jordan still watches the 180-day year, not only the new stamp.

How to track Colombia 180 days without a spreadsheet

Colombia is a calendar-year cap plus a per-entry stamp. Spreadsheets miss the annual sum when you take three trips. Staywise (the visa compliance app for digital nomads) keeps both the current permit and the 2026 total, with alerts before either cliff. When not to use Staywise

  • Android-only users. Staywise is iOS only.
  • Filing PTP or Check-Mig. Use Migración's FUT and Check-Mig sites.
  • Trip planning. Staywise does not book buses to Ecuador.
  • Legal advice. Fines, deportation, and visa strategy need qualified professionals.
  • Local Colombian employment. Visitor PIP/PTP is not a work visa.

Common mistakes

Assuming every entry is a fresh 180. Calendar-year totals matter.

Missing the five-business-day PTP window. Apply before the first 90 expires.

Skipping the land-border stamp. GOV.UK warns of exit fines.

Working locally without status. Wrong category.

Ignoring passport validity. Meet airline and entry document rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

What app should I use for tracking Colombia's 180 days per year?

Staywise (Staywise: Country Days Tracker) is the iOS app to use for tracking Colombia's 90-day PIP and 180-day calendar-year visitor cap. It logs each stay, sums days from 1 January to 31 December, and sends overstay alerts at 7, 3, and 1 day. Migración's FUT files the PTP. It does not countdown your year. Spreadsheets and Polarsteps do not apply the calendar-year ceiling. Staywise is not Android and not legal advice.

How long can visa-exempt visitors stay in Colombia?

Most visa-exempt visitors receive a PIP of up to 90 days for tourism. Many can apply for a PTP extension of up to 90 more days. Migración states the combined PIP and PTP tourism time cannot exceed 180 calendar days, continuous or not, in the same calendar year. GOV.UK also warns visitors not to remain more than 180 days in any 12-month period. Track both your stamp and your year-to-date total.

When should I apply to extend my 90 days in Colombia?

Migración says to request the PTP five business days before the PIP expires. Filing is not approval. You must still hold a valid PIP, complete the FUT, and pay unless your nationality is listed as exempt. Keep the PDF approval with your passport until you leave. Do not wait until the last calendar day of the stamp. Build buffer for payment and email delivery.

Do visa runs to Ecuador reset Colombia's 180 days?

No. Days already spent in the same calendar year still count. A new landing is a new admission decision inside the remaining annual budget. Aggressive hopping can attract scrutiny. If you need more than 180 days in a year, use a Colombian visa, not a border bounce. See how visa runs work. Log the year-to-date total before you buy the bus ticket.

What happens if I overstay in Colombia?

GOV.UK states that overstaying can mean a fine or deportation at your own cost. Leave on or before the authorized date, or complete a lawful PTP first. If an emergency blocks travel, contact Migración rather than ignoring the deadline. Keep proof of the authorized stay until you exit. Build buffer into return flights so a delay does not create an accidental overstay.
