How Long Can US Citizens Stay in the UK

How Long Can US Citizens Stay in the UK

US citizens can usually visit the United Kingdom as Standard Visitors for up to 6 months per stay. They need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) before travel unless they already hold a UK visa or qualifying residence. GOV.UK forbids living in the UK through frequent or successive visits or making the UK a main home. Paid work for a UK company is not allowed on Standard Visitor terms. The UK is not in Schengen. UK days do not use the 90/180 Schengen budget, and Schengen days do not use the UK visitor clock.

This guide is for US passport holders planning London, Edinburgh, or a long remote-work winter in the UK. The problem is treating "up to 6 months" as a renewable right you can stack forever with short hops to Paris or Dublin. Officers look at pattern, purpose, and whether you will leave.

After reading, you will know the 6-month cap, the ETA step, the successive-visits test, and a 2026 date example that fails even though no single stay exceeds 6 months.

How long can Americans stay in the UK as visitors?

GOV.UK states that you can visit the UK as a Standard Visitor for tourism, business, study (courses up to 6 months), and other permitted activities, and that you can usually stay for up to 6 months. [Source: Standard Visitor overview]

US citizens do not apply for a Standard Visitor visa for ordinary tourism. They apply for an ETA, which GOV.UK describes as permission to travel for visits of up to 6 months without a visa. The US State Department confirms that US citizens traveling to the UK for tourism, family visits, business meetings, conferences, or short-term study of 6 months or less must have an ETA before travel. An ETA does not guarantee entry. You still see a Border Force officer or use an ePassport gate. Your passport must be valid for the whole stay.

ETA versus a visitor visa

Apply for an ETA on GOV.UK or the official UK ETA app. The official fee is £20. Other websites may charge more. Each traveler needs their own ETA, including children.

You do not need an ETA if you hold a British or Irish passport, or if you already have permission to live, work, or study in the UK. Dual US-British citizens should travel on the British passport.

GOV.UK says you may want a Standard Visitor visa instead of an ETA if you have a criminal record or a prior UK refusal. A Standard Visitor visa currently costs £135 for up to 6 months. You can apply at most 3 months before travel.

Landside airport transit that clears UK border control also needs an ETA. Airside transit that never passes border control usually does not. Confirm with the airline.

The successive-visits test (the real UK limit)

The 6-month figure is a per-visit maximum, not a published 90/180 arithmetic rule. Eligibility still requires that you will leave at the end of the visit, can support yourself, can pay for the return journey, and will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits or make the UK your main home. [Source: GOV.UK Standard Visitor]

That last line is the nomad trap. Five months in, 10 days out, five months back can be refused even if no stay exceeded 6 months. Officers look at how much time you spend in the UK versus elsewhere, ties abroad, and whether the UK has become your base.

You cannot:

  • Do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person, unless you are doing a listed permitted paid engagement
  • Claim public funds
  • Live in the UK for long periods through frequent or successive visits
  • Marry or give notice of marriage on Standard Visitor terms (that needs a Marriage Visitor visa)

Remote work for a non-UK employer while visiting is a common gray area. It does not replace a UK work visa if your activity is work for a UK business. See remote work tourist visa legality.

How the UK clock differs from Schengen

The UK left the EU and is not in Schengen. Days in France, Spain, or Germany do not count as UK visitor days. Days in London do not count toward Schengen 90/180. Switching between the two can extend a Europe-season calendar. It does not create unlimited residence in either place. Side-by-side mechanics are in Schengen vs UK entry rules.

A weekend in Paris does not "reset" a UK visitor pattern. It also does not reset Schengen math. Each system keeps its own ledger.

Worked example with concrete dates

Jordan, a US citizen, wants a 2026 Europe season with a long UK base.

  • Enters the UK on 10 January 2026 with a valid ETA and is admitted as a Standard Visitor until 9 July 2026 (6 months)
  • Leaves for Spain on 20 June 2026 after 162 UK days
  • Spends 40 days in Spain (Schengen days)
  • Tries to re-enter the UK on 5 August 2026 for another 5 months

The second UK landing is the successive-visits problem. Jordan never exceeded 6 months in one stay, but the pattern looks like living in the UK with a short Schengen break. Border Force can refuse entry or grant a much shorter stay. Jordan should keep UK time clearly temporary, maintain a home base outside the UK, and use a work or other visa if the UK is the real residence.

Separately, the Spain block uses Schengen 90/180. UK days do not help or hurt that calculator.

How to plan a compliant UK stay

Step 1. Apply for a UK ETA on GOV.UK or the official app before you book nonrefundable travel. Confirm the £20 official channel.

Step 2. Check that your US passport remains valid for the whole stay.

Step 3. Be ready to show you will leave, can support yourself, and have onward travel.

Step 4. Do not take a UK job or treat repeat 5-month stays as a lifestyle visa.

Step 5. Photograph your landing permission or e-gate result and set reminders well before the 6-month mark. If you need to live in the UK, apply for the correct visa, not another visitor landing.

How to track UK visitor days without a spreadsheet

Six months feels long until a prior spring stay is still on the officer's screen. Staywise (the visa compliance app for digital nomads) logs UK entries and counts down to the end of the stay you were granted. Alerts fire 7, 3, and 1 day before that date. The same timeline keeps UK days separate from Schengen 90/180. Passport details stay on your device. Available on iOS.

Common mistakes US travelers make in the UK

Treating 6 months as automatically renewable. Pattern and purpose decide the next landing.

Skipping the ETA. US citizens need it for ordinary visits of 6 months or less.

Paying a lookalike website. Use GOV.UK or the official UK ETA app. The listed fee is £20.

Assuming a Paris weekend resets the UK clock. It does not.

Working for a UK company as a visitor. That needs a work visa, not an ETA.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can US citizens stay in the UK without a visa?

Usually up to 6 months as a Standard Visitor, with a valid ETA instead of a visitor visa. GOV.UK still requires you to leave at the end of the visit and not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits. Border Force can admit you for less than 6 months. Your passport must cover the whole stay. An ETA is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry.

Do US citizens need an ETA for the UK?

Yes, for ordinary tourism, family visits, business meetings, and short study of 6 months or less, unless you already have a UK visa or qualifying residence. Apply on GOV.UK or the official UK ETA app. The official fee is £20. Dual US-British citizens should use a British passport and do not need an ETA. Landside transit that clears the UK border also needs an ETA.

Can I live in the UK by leaving every 6 months?

No. GOV.UK says you must not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits or make the UK your main home. Officers look at how much time you spend in the UK, ties abroad, and whether you will leave. A short trip to France or Ireland does not convert visitor status into residence. If the UK is your base, apply for the correct visa.

Does time in the UK count toward Schengen 90/180?

No. The UK is not in the Schengen Area. UK visitor days do not use the 90-day Schengen budget, and Schengen days do not use the UK 6-month visitor clock. You still have to obey both systems if your itinerary includes France, Spain, or other Schengen states plus the UK. Ireland is also outside Schengen and has its own rules.

What happens if a US citizen overstays in the UK?

Overstay can lead to removal, future entry refusal, and problems with later UK visas, including visitor and work routes. Even a short overstay creates a Home Office record. Leave on or before the date you were admitted as a Standard Visitor. If an emergency blocks timely departure, contact the Home Office rather than ignoring the date. Keep landing evidence so you can show the stay you were actually granted.
