How long can Americans stay in Panama without a visa?

Can US tourists extend a Panama stay?

That procedure is the general 90-day tourist-visa overlay. It is not a way to stretch a 180-day US grant to 270 or 360 days. If you already received 180 days, plan to leave, change status, or apply for residency. Do not expect a second tourist block inside the same admission.
How to plan a compliant Panama stay
Step 1. Confirm your US passport has at least three months' validity on arrival, plus a blank page for the stamp.
Step 2. Carry proof of at least US$500 and a paid ticket out of Panama that matches the stay you will request.
Step 3. Complete any entry declaration Panama currently uses and keep the confirmation.
Step 4. Photograph the entry stamp or digital permission the same day. If the officer wrote 90, your limit is 90.
Step 5. Leave by that date, pay any overstay fine at SNM before departure if you already missed it, or file a residence category in time. Do not treat a Costa Rica weekend as a guaranteed reset.
Worked example with concrete dates
Alex, a US citizen, arrives at Tocumen on 10 January 2026. The officer grants 180 days. Alex photographs a stay through 8 July 2026. There is no tourist extension that adds another 180 days onto this admission. Alex must exit by 8 July 2026 or hold an approved change of status.
If Alex instead received only 60 days, through 10 March 2026, the Panama Digital extension path might, if the Director General agrees, complete a 90-day total (around 9 April 2026). That still is not the US 180-day maximum. The 180-day grant has to happen at entry.
Alex then spends 9-12 July 2026 in Costa Rica and tries to re-enter Panama on 12 July for a "fresh 180." That is a new admission, not a right. SNM records prior entries. Short hops after a max stay can produce a shorter grant or a refusal. Compare that pattern with how visa runs work.
Overstay fines
SNM's FAQ prices overstay at B/.50.00 per month or fraction of a month. The listed rate is B/.100.00 per month or fraction if you are married to a Panamanian or have Panamanian children and can prove it. First-time payment typically requires a reception ticket, carnet photos, passport bio page, a clear copy of the entry stamp, and a B/.5.00 passport-registration fee if you are not already in the system.
SNM also notes that if you do not leave within 7 business days after paying, you must handle the fine process as instructed. Unpaid overstay can block boarding. Voluntary departure after a serious violation can carry an entry bar of years.
Pay at official SNM channels. Do not treat the 50-balboa monthly rate as a cheap extra tourist month.
Visa runs and longer stays
