How Long Can US Citizens Stay in the Netherlands

US citizens can stay in the Netherlands visa-free for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen Area. NetherlandsWorldwide states that if you do not need a visa, you may visit for a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or family visits. Those days are shared with Germany, Belgium, France, and every other Schengen country. There is no separate Dutch tourist clock. For stays over 90 days, US nationals are exempt from the MVV (provisional residence permit) but still need a Dutch residence permit. Self-employed Americans often use the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty path through the IND.
This guide is for US passport holders planning Amsterdam, Rotterdam, or a Dutch workation, including remote workers who hear that "Americans can just stay" because of DAFT. DAFT is a residence overlay, not a longer tourist stamp.
After reading, you will know the shared 90/180 limit, the MVV exemption, when BRP registration applies, and how to run a date example.

How long can Americans stay in the Netherlands without a visa?
NetherlandsWorldwide tells visa-exempt visitors they may stay a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period. If you already visited the Netherlands or another Schengen country in the past 180 days, use the EU short-stay calculator.
The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) repeats the same 90/180 visa-free period for travelers who are not Schengen nationals and do not hold a residence permit or MVV. You may enter and exit several times inside that budget. You still need a passport issued no more than 10 years ago and valid at least 3 months after you leave Schengen.
The 90 days are not "Amsterdam days." They are Schengen days. A month in Berlin plus two months in Amsterdam can exhaust the entire allowance. See the Schengen 90/180 rule explained and how long US citizens can stay in Croatia for the same clock.
How the Schengen 90/180 window works for the Netherlands
On any day you want to enter or remain, look back 180 days and sum every day you were in any Schengen country. The total cannot exceed 90. Internal travel between the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany does not reset the count.
Leaving to the UK or Ireland pauses new Schengen days. It does not delete days already used. EES now stores biometric entries and exits. As of 10 April 2026 it replaces stamping for this purpose. ETIAS, when it launches, will be a travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors. It will not add days. See what is ETIAS.
Entry is still a border decision. The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee (KMar) can ask for onward travel, funds, and a purpose that matches a short visit.
National overlay: MVV exemption, DAFT, and BRP
Three Dutch rules sit on top of Schengen.
MVV exemption. The IND MVV exemptions list includes the United States. US nationals do not need a provisional residence permit sticker to travel to the Netherlands to collect a residence permit. You still need the residence permit itself if you will stay more than 90 days. The exemption is not extra tourist time.
DAFT / self-employed residence. US citizens who will start a business or work as self-employed in the Netherlands apply for the IND residence permit as a self-employed person. The Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) is the nationality-specific overlay people mean when they say Americans can "live in the Netherlands as freelancers." It is a permit process, not a 180-day tourist stamp. Do not arrive as a tourist and assume DAFT is already active.
BRP registration. If you will live in the Netherlands for longer than 4 months, NetherlandsWorldwide says you must register in person with the municipality within 5 days of arrival. That assumes you have a lawful basis to live there. A 90-day tourist visit does not create a 4-month residence plan. Short work or study under 4 months can use the non-residents (RNI) register instead.
Tourist status is not Dutch employment. Remote work for a foreign employer is a gray area. See remote work tourist visa legality.
How to plan a compliant Netherlands stay
Step 1. Add every Schengen day in the last 180 days, including Belgium and Germany, not only the Netherlands.
Step 2. Confirm the passport is under 10 years old and valid at least 3 months after you leave Schengen.
Step 3. Carry proof of onward travel and funds. Be ready to show a tourist or short-business purpose.
Step 4. If you need more than 90 days, apply for the matching IND residence permit. Use the US MVV exemption only as a travel simplification, not as permission to skip the permit.
Step 5. Register in the BRP only when you will actually live in the Netherlands more than 4 months on a lawful stay. Do not treat municipal registration as a substitute for immigration status.
Worked example with concrete dates
Riley, a US citizen, plans Amsterdam + Berlin in 2026
- Enters the Netherlands on 2 February 2026, leaves on 3 April 2026 (61 days)
- Wants to enter Germany on 1 May 2026 for 40 days
On 1 May 2026 the 180-day lookback still includes the full Dutch stay. Adding 40 German days would total 101, which exceeds 90. Riley can stay 29 more Schengen days or wait until February days age out of the window. A weekend in London after Amsterdam does not delete the 61 Dutch days. If Riley instead wants a year in Amsterdam as a freelancer, that is a DAFT or other residence filing, not a longer tourist grant.
How Staywise tracks Netherlands and Schengen days
Staywise (the visa compliance app for digital nomads) tracks every day you spend in the Netherlands against the rolling 90/180 rule across all Schengen countries. Alerts fire 7, 3, and 1 day before you would overstay. That is how you catch a Belgian weekend that still counts.
Passport details stay on your device. Only travel dates and countries sync. Free trial, then annual subscription. See App Store for current pricing.

How to track this stay limit automatically
Country stay limits only help if you know how many days you have already used. Staywise counts days across countries automatically and sends overstay alerts before a limit hits. Available on iOS.

Common mistakes
Counting only Dutch days. Germany and Belgium use the same 90.
Thinking DAFT is a tourist extension. It is a residence permit you apply for.
Thinking the MVV exemption is extra days. It only skips the MVV sticker for residence applicants.
Registering at the gemeente as a 90-day tourist and calling it status. BRP is a population record, not a visa.
Assuming ETIAS will add time. It will not.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days can a US citizen stay in the Netherlands without a visa?
Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area, including the Netherlands. NetherlandsWorldwide confirms visa-exempt visitors may stay that long for tourism, business, or family visits. Days in other Schengen countries count toward the same 90. Your passport must be valid at least 3 months after you leave Schengen and must not be more than 10 years old. Officers can still request funds and onward travel.
Does time in Germany or Belgium count against my Netherlands stay?
Yes. Schengen short-stay days are pooled across all 29 Schengen countries. Thirty days in Germany leave you 60 days for the Netherlands and the rest of the zone inside the same rolling 180-day window. Belgium, France, Czechia, and other Schengen states count the same way. Always recompute the full-zone total before booking another European leg. Use the official EU short-stay calculator as the reference method.
Do US citizens need an MVV to stay in the Netherlands more than 90 days?
US nationality is on the IND MVV-exemption list, so you generally do not need a provisional residence permit sticker. You still need a Dutch residence permit for stays beyond the 90/180 short-stay limit. The exemption makes travel to collect or start that permit simpler. It does not let you remain as a tourist past 90 days in 180. Apply for the correct IND category (work, DAFT self-employment, family, study) before the short-stay budget runs out.
What is DAFT and does it change the tourist clock?
The Dutch-American Friendship Treaty path is a self-employed residence overlay for US (and Japanese) nationals who qualify through the IND. It is not a longer tourist admission. Until a residence permit is granted, you remain on the Schengen 90/180 clock. Do not start a Dutch business on tourist status and assume DAFT already applies. File the permit, then register in the BRP if you will live in the Netherlands more than 4 months.
What happens if a US citizen overstays in the Netherlands?
Overstay is irregular stay under Schengen rules. Consequences can include fines, an EES overstay record, refusal of later entry, and in serious cases an entry ban shared across Schengen. The IND and KMar treat the 90/180 limit as the visa-free ceiling. Exit as soon as you can and keep date evidence. Future Schengen visas and entries become harder once an overstay sits in shared systems.
