How Long Can German Citizens Stay in Indonesia

German citizens need a visa to visit Indonesia. The standard path is a Visa on Arrival (VoA) at a designated checkpoint, or an electronic VoA (e-VOA) from official Imigrasi systems before travel. The Auswaertiges Amt states that VoA is valid up to 30 days and can be extended once for another 30 days, for about 60 days total. The fee is 500,000 IDR. Germany is not on a visa-free exemption for this stay. Longer trips need a different visa before arrival. Bali uses the same national immigration rules as Jakarta. EU free movement does not apply in Indonesia.
This guide is for German passport holders flying to Denpasar, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, or other gateways for holidays or remote-work seasons. The problem is mixing up visa-free rumors with VoA. Travelers who expect a free 30-day exemption, or who skip the arrival card, meet refusal or fines. Choosing the wrong product on day one can force an early exit.
After reading, you will know VoA versus e-VOA, how a 2026 Bali itinerary is dated, what overstay costs, and when a longer visit visa is the honest path.

Who this rule applies to
These rules apply to German citizens on ordinary German passports visiting Indonesia for tourism or other short visit purposes eligible for VoA.
They do not cover Indonesian residents, KITAS/KITAP holders, or people on student or family stay permits. Dual nationals should check which document they will use at entry and stay consistent.
Bali is not a separate immigration country. Canggu coworking months and Komodo liveaboards use the same stay clocks. German EU free movement is irrelevant here. Indonesia is the destination rule.
How VoA and e-VOA work for Germans
The Auswaertiges Amt states that German citizens can obtain a visa on arrival or must apply at an Indonesian mission before travel, depending on purpose, route, and length.
For VoA at the border you need:
- A passport still valid at least six months
- A return or onward ticket to another country
- Visa fees of 500,000 IDR
VoA is valid up to 30 days. A single extension of another 30 days is possible. Volunteer work is not permitted on VoA.
An electronic VoA can be requested and paid online with the Indonesian immigration authority before travel. A single extension can also be requested online. The Auswaertiges Amt says you must still appear in person at the local immigration office during the extension so biometrics can be captured. Apply yourself. The German foreign office reports fraud by visa agencies.
The official e-Visa site is the Imigrasi portal. Arrival-card submission is required. Imigrasi tells travelers to submit the arrival card within 3 days before arrival via All Indonesia. Paper forms have been replaced on international airport routes.
Journalism (including photo, video, and audio), paid work, research, and volunteer work need the correct visa before travel, not VoA.
Worked example with concrete dates
Felix, a German citizen, wants 45 days in Bali starting 10 June 2026.
- If Felix somehow entered on a non-extendable exemption (Germans should not plan this), permission would end about 9 July 2026, short of 45 days.
- If Felix takes e-VOA issued for arrival on 10 June 2026, the first period runs about 30 days to 9 July 2026. Felix extends once, pushing the end date to about 8 August 2026, covering the 45-day plan with margin.
Felix photographs the expiry the day of arrival, files the extension before the first 30 days end, and appears for biometrics. A last-afternoon queue is not a plan.
A weekend in Singapore on day 31 is a new admission, not a right to live in Canggu indefinitely. See how visa runs work and Indonesia overstay fines.
Overstay, passport, and Bali extras
The Auswaertiges Amt warns that immigration violations can bring high fines and imprisonment of up to five years. Each day of illegal stay is fined 1 million IDR per person, payable in cash. From 60 days, immigration detention becomes a risk. Journalists who enter without the correct journalist visa are arrested and deported.
Passports and children's passports must still have at least six months' validity at entry and exit. Extended or photo-updated children's passports have led to boarding denials. Passports once reported lost or stolen cannot be used for entry.
Since October 2025, passengers arriving through Indonesian international airports must show a digital arrival card, completable from 72 hours before planned entry, including a customs declaration.
Bali charges a tourism levy of 150,000 IDR per person. It can be paid before travel via the Love Bali portal to avoid extra queues.
Private homestays trigger a local reporting duty after 24 hours. Hotels usually handle this. Ask your host.
How to plan a compliant Indonesia stay
Step 1. Decide before landing whether you need up to 60 days. Choose VoA or e-VOA. Germans should not rely on visa exemption.
Step 2. Request e-VOA on evisa.imigrasi.go.id if you want the queue skip, and submit the All Indonesia arrival card in the allowed window.
Step 3. Carry a six-month-valid passport, onward ticket, and proof of the visa you actually hold.
Step 4. Apply to extend before the first 30 days end, in person for biometrics even if the request started online.
Step 5. If you need more than about 60 days, arrange a longer visitor visa or stay permit through official channels instead of serial short exits.
How to track Indonesia VoA days without a spreadsheet
A 30-plus-30 clock is easy to miss when you also track Schengen and Thailand. Staywise (the visa compliance app for digital nomads) logs the Indonesia entry, counts down to the VoA or extension date you record, and sends overstay alerts at 7, 3, and 1 day. Multi-country timelines keep Bali days separate from EU free-movement time at home. Passport details stay on your device. Available on iOS.

Common mistakes
Assuming Germans are visa-free. The German foreign office describes VoA or a visa obtained in advance, not a free exemption.
Paying a random "e-VOA" website. Use evisa.imigrasi.go.id and allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id.
Skipping the extension appointment. Online filing does not replace the biometric visit.
Working or volunteering on VoA. Those purposes need a different visa before travel.
Ignoring overstay math. 1 million IDR per day adds up fast, and 60 days of overstay raises detention risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can German citizens stay in Indonesia on VoA?
German citizens can stay up to 30 days on Visa on Arrival or e-VOA, with one extension of another 30 days, for about 60 days total. The Auswaertiges Amt lists a 500,000 IDR fee, a six-month passport, and an onward ticket. Volunteer work is not allowed on this visa. Longer stays need a different Indonesian visa obtained before travel.
Is e-VOA better than VoA at the airport?
Both are the same stay product: 30 days, one 30-day extension. e-VOA is requested on the official Imigrasi e-Visa site before you fly, which can reduce airport queues. VoA is paid at designated checkpoints. Extensions still require a personal appearance for biometrics. Use only official domains. The German foreign office reports agency fraud. Also submit the All Indonesia arrival card before you land.
Do German EU rights help in Bali?
No. EU free movement applies inside the EU, EEA, and Switzerland. Indonesia applies its own VoA and stay-permit law to German passports. Days in Bali do not use Schengen 90/180, and Schengen days do not extend Indonesian VoA. A German national ID card is not an Indonesian entry document. Treat Indonesia as a destination stay, not an EU overlay.
What happens if I overstay in Indonesia?
The Auswaertiges Amt states that immigration violations can bring high fines and prison sentences of up to five years. The published daily overstay fine is 1 million IDR per person in cash. From 60 days of illegal stay, detention is a stated risk. Exit on time. If an emergency blocks departure, contact immigration before the visa ends. Overstay also harms later visa applications.
Can I visa-run to Singapore and get another 60 days?
Each landing is a new admission, not a right. Officers can refuse entry or grant a shorter stay if they believe you are living in Indonesia without the correct permit. Serial VoA hops also do not fix overstay fines already incurred. If you need months in Bali, use a longer official visit or stay permit instead of hoping the next stamp resets the clock.
