How Long Can German Citizens Stay in Colombia

How Long Can German Citizens Stay in Colombia

German citizens do not need a visa for a purely tourist stay in Colombia. Migración Colombia sets the permitted stay with an entry stamp, usually up to 90 days, and a one-time paid extension of another 90 days is common. That produces a practical visitor ceiling near 180 days. Complete Check-Mig within 72 hours before entry and again before exit. Get a stamp on land borders or you can face an exit fine. Dual German-Colombian citizens must enter and leave on a Colombian passport.

This guide is for German passport holders planning Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, or the coffee region, including remote workers who treat Colombia as a months-long base. EU free movement does not apply here. Colombia is not in the EU, EEA, or Schengen, so the destination rule is Colombian visitor permission, not the 90/180 Schengen budget.

The problem is mixing the first 90-day stamp with the 180-day visitor ceiling, or assuming an Ecuador hop erases days already used. After reading, you will know what the Auswärtiges Amt actually says, how Check-Mig fits landing, and how to track the stamp you received.

Who this applies to

These rules apply to German citizens on a regular German passport admitted as visitors for tourism.

They do not cover work or study visas, residence permits, or German-Colombian dual citizens. Dual citizens must use Colombian documents. Paid work for a Colombian employer needs the matching visa. Short business that is not tourism can require a visa. Ask the Colombian Embassy in Berlin if your purpose is not tourism.

Visa-free entry for German citizens

Germany's Federal Foreign Office states that German citizens do not need a visa for a purely tourist stay in Colombia. Migración Colombia sets the stay length with a passport stamp at the airport or land border. Ask officers, with tickets or an invitation, to grant a period that covers your planned trip. The first maximum is 90 days, extendable by another 90 days. [Source: Auswärtiges Amt Colombia]

Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists Germany (Alemania) among nationalities exempt from a visitor visa for short stays of less than 90 days, which can be extended up to 180 days where the rules allow. [Source: Resolución 5488 de 2022]

What officers may check:

  • Valid German passport in good condition
  • Return or onward plans
  • Proof of funds and a Colombian address
  • Purpose consistent with tourism
  • Check-Mig confirmation

The Auswärtiges Amt warns that some travelers have been refused when the passport had less than six months of validity beyond the planned exit date. Airlines often enforce the stricter reading. Documents once reported lost or stolen are regularly refused even after German authorities restored them.

How to complete Check-Mig and enter

Step 1. Complete Check-Mig within 72 hours before entry. The Auswärtiges Amt also requires a new Check-Mig within 72 hours before exit. Show the confirmation to the airline before departure from Germany.

Step 2. Photograph your entry stamp or digital permit and note the expiry date. Land, sea, and river entries need a stamp. Overland buses from Ecuador sometimes skip the booth. Get out and stamp, or you can pay a fine on the way out.

Step 3. If you need more than the first grant, start the Migración Colombia extension before day 90 ends. Build buffer for appointments and systems. An extension is fee-based and not a right.

Step 4. Track total visitor days, not only the current stamp. Leaving to Ecuador or Panama does not erase days already used.

Step 5. If you need more than about 180 days, explore a Colombian visa or residence category instead of serial tourist presence. Compare frameworks in what is a digital nomad visa and tourist visa vs digital nomad visa.

Worked example with concrete dates

Lena, a German citizen, enters Bogotá on 12 January 2026 and receives 90 days through 11 April 2026. She extends successfully for another 90 days through 10 July 2026. That uses roughly 180 visitor days.

If Lena exits on 1 July 2026 and tries to re-enter on 15 July 2026 for another 90 days, officers may refuse or limit entry because the visitor ceiling may already be exhausted. A weekend in Quito in March does not wipe January-to-March days already counted.

Lena should not plan a second half-year on pure tourist permission without checking remaining allowance and current Migración practice.

Remote work, visa runs, and longer stays

Tourist permission is not a Colombian work visa. Remote work for a foreign employer while living as a visitor is common among digital nomads and still different from employment by a Colombian entity. See remote work tourist visa legality.

Leaving to Ecuador, Panama, or Peru creates a new admission decision. It does not wipe prior days counted toward the visitor ceiling. Aggressive hopping can attract scrutiny. Background reading: how visa runs work and are visa runs legal.

US, UK, and Canadian official wording on Colombia is close but not identical (calendar year versus 12-month period versus 90 plus 90). Do not paste another passport's blog onto a German passport. Contrast: how long US citizens can stay in Colombia.

German tax residence day counting is separate from Colombian immigration days. Track both if relevant. See the 183-day rule explained.

Common mistakes

Assuming every entry is a fresh 180. Prior visitor days still count.

Missing the extension window. Apply before the first 90 expires. There is no right to an extra 90 days.

Skipping Check-Mig on the way out. The Auswärtiges Amt requires it before exit as well as entry.

Entering by land without a stamp. Exit fines follow, especially on the Ecuador route.

Working locally without status. Wrong category.

Using a German passport as a dual Colombian citizen. Colombian law requires the Colombian passport.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can German citizens stay in Colombia without a visa?

German citizens can usually stay up to 90 days visa-free for tourism, with the officer stamping the exact end date. The Auswärtiges Amt describes a first maximum of 90 days, extendable by another 90 days through Migración Colombia. Cancillería lists Germany among visa-exempt nationalities for short stays of less than 90 days that can extend up to 180 days where the rules allow. Always confirm your stamp and remaining visitor allowance for this trip.

Can I extend my 90 days in Colombia?

Often yes. The Auswärtiges Amt says a one-time paid extension of another 90 days is usually granted, but there is no legal claim to it. Apply at Migración Colombia before the first period expires, pay the fee, and keep approval proof. An extension is still visitor status, not a residence permit. Keep digital copies of the approval with your passport until you leave Colombia.

Do German citizens need Check-Mig for Colombia?

Yes. The Auswärtiges Amt says travelers must register online through Check-Mig within 72 hours before entry and again within 72 hours before exit. Airlines may ask for the confirmation before you board in Germany. Complete it with the same passport you will present. Photograph the confirmation. Skipping the exit filing is a common miss on short hops to Ecuador or Panama.

Can I work remotely in Colombia as a tourist?

Visitor status is for temporary stay, not Colombian local employment. Many nomads work online for foreign employers while present as tourists, which is different from holding a Colombian work visa. If you will be employed by a Colombian company or need multi-year stability, use the correct visa or residence pathway. Keep your activities consistent with the purpose you declared at the border.

What happens if I overstay in Colombia?

The Auswärtiges Amt warns that staying past the stamped period can mean a high fine at exit. Leave on or before your authorized date, or complete a lawful extension first. If an emergency blocks travel, contact Migración Colombia rather than ignoring the deadline. Keep proof of your authorized stay length until you exit. Build buffer into return flights so a delay does not create an accidental overstay.
