Argentina Digital Nomad Visa Guide (2026)

Argentina Digital Nomad Visa Guide (2026)

Argentina's digital nomad route is transitory residence under article 24(h) of Migration Law 25.871, Decree 616/2010, and DNM Disposition 758/2022. It is for foreigners from countries that do not need a tourist visa, who will provide remote services through computers, telecoms, or similar means to people or companies domiciled outside Argentina. The stay is up to 180 days and is extendable for an equal term. Official pages list identity, Argentine criminal records, address, regular entry, a signed request with a short CV, and proof of the remote activity plus at least one occupational reference. They do not publish a dollar or peso income floor. If a blog quotes $1,500 or $2,500 a month, that figure is not on argentina.gob.ar.

This guide is for US, UK, EU, Canadian, Australian, and other tourist-visa-exempt passport holders who want Buenos Aires or another Argentine city as a remote-work base for half a year, with a possible second 180 days.

The problem it solves is treating a 90-day tourist admission as a work-authorized year. Tourist entry is still available to visa-exempt nationals. Digital-nomad transitory residence is the category that matches foreign remote services. See how long US citizens can stay in Argentina for the tourist overlay.

You will get who qualifies, what Migraciones actually asks for, how TIE electronic entry differs from an in-country filing, how the extension works, and which mistakes stall a file.

Who Argentina's digital nomad residence is for

The government service page is precise. It is aimed at foreigners who:

  • Hold nationality of a country that does not require a tourist visa to enter Argentina
  • Will provide services remotely using IT, telecommunications, or similar means
  • Serve natural or legal persons domiciled in the exterior

If your passport needs a tourist visa for Argentina, this category is not the listed path. If your clients sit in Buenos Aires, you are not describing the activity the law targeted.

Mercosur nationals may use the travel documents listed in the Mercosur travel-document agreement instead of a passport, with the exceptions the page names. Everyone else uses a valid, current passport.

This is transitory residence, not temporary or permanent residence. It does not, by itself, convert into an Argentine DNI as a long-term immigrant. It is a 180-day (extendable) legal stay for foreign remote work.

Income: what the government does and does not say

The "what do I need?" lists on argentina.gob.ar ask for proof of the activity (contract, company backing, evidence of labor demand, income or fee receipts) and at least one occupational reference. They do not state a minimum monthly USD or ARS amount.

The extension page asks for proof of income received for services performed during the residence period you want to extend. That is a "show the work happened" test, still without a published floor.

Because no official number is on those pages, this guide does not invent one. Officers can still ask for more evidence. Weak or contradictory activity proof is a practical refusal risk even without a tariff.

Foreign documents need apostille (Hague countries) or Argentine consular legalization, then Spanish translation by a traductor público nacional, legalized by the translators' college, unless a treaty says otherwise. Present originals. DNM may demand extra papers.

How long you can stay

Initial grant: transitory residence for up to one hundred eighty (180) days.

Extension: the prórroga page repeats a transitory residence of up to 180 days, extendable. The 2022 political announcement described 180 days extendable once. Confirm on your approval whether a second extension exists. Do not assume a third 180-day slice.

Two clocks still matter:

  • Tourist admission if you have not yet switched category (often 90 days for visa-exempt nationals, with a possible in-country tourist extension under general rules)
  • Digital-nomad transitory residence once DNM grants art. 24(h) status

Those clocks are not additive in a sloppy way. When the nomad residence starts, that document is the one to obey.

Tax residency is a third clock. Living in Argentina most of a year can raise Argentine tax questions even when immigration status is clean. US citizens still file US returns. See the 183-day rule explained.

Two application channels

A. Electronic entry (TIE 24h) from abroad

Tramitación de Ingreso Electrónica - Nómadas digitales is an online path for the same visa-exempt remote-worker profile. You upload:

  1. A signed request with personal data and the independent work you will do
  2. A short CV (experience and education)
  3. Passport biodata image (JPG)
  4. A new face photo on white background, taken at filing, JPG (not an old headshot)
  5. Proof of the activity (contract, company backing, labor-demand evidence, income or fee receipts) and at least one occupational reference

Start at the TIE 24h portal. If approved, you receive email proof to show the inspector at the border. Validity on that page is 180 days.

The official fee table charges a TIE for art. 24(h) categories at 120 consular units (uc), plus a consular act. Other art. 24(h) TIE lines are 80 uc. Read the row that matches digital nomads, not a random USD blog fee.

B. In-person after you are already in Argentina

The main residence page says the file is in person, not through Radex:

You must be inside Argentina. Procedures are personal. The only payments should be the ones the official platform generates. A "gestor" is not required.

Documents for the in-country residence file:

  • Valid passport (or listed Mercosur document)
  • Argentine criminal-record certificate from the Registro Nacional de Reincidencia (required from age 16)
  • Proof of address
  • Proof of regular entry
  • Signed request with personal data, the remote work you will do, and a short CV
  • Proof of activity and at least one occupational reference

How to apply for Argentina digital nomad residence

Step 1. Confirm your nationality is tourist-visa-exempt and that every client or employer is domiciled outside Argentina.

Step 2. Choose TIE from abroad or an in-country DNM filing. TIE is the remote pre-clearance. In-country is for people already admitted.

Step 3. Write the request and CV that describe the remote activity in plain terms. Attach contracts or fee receipts and one professional reference.

Step 4. Apostille or legalize foreign papers and obtain sworn Spanish translations where required.

Step 5. File TIE or attend DNM with originals. Pay only the official tasas (UMSM or uc) on the fee chart. The chart's note at the time of verification said 1 UMSM = ARS 1,000. Confirm the live UMSM value when you pay.

Step 6. At the border (TIE) or after the DNM grant, photograph the 180-day end date. Tourist stamps no longer control once this residence is in force.

Step 7. If you need more time, file the prórroga with income proof from the first period, Argentine (and origin) criminal records as listed, passport, and address. Do not wait until day 180.

Transitory residence except tourist is billed on the fee chart at 16 UMSM (Mercosur) or 32 UMSM (extra-Mercosur). Changing tourist (art. 24(a)) to special reasons (art. 24(h)) is 100 UMSM. Extension of art. 24(h) transitory residence is 20 UMSM (Mercosur) or 40 UMSM (extra-Mercosur). Those are official units, not a promise of a dollar total.

How this status interacts with tourist days

Visa-exempt nationals can still enter as tourists. That is a different subcategory. Digital-nomad transitory residence is the one that matches remote services to foreign counterparties.

If you enter as a tourist and later switch to art. 24(h), the fee chart has a specific line for that change (100 UMSM). Switching is a DNM act, not a silent decision you make in a café.

Do not work locally for an Argentine-domiciled payer on this category. The statutory description is services in favor of persons or entities domiciled abroad. Local employment is a different residence type.

Overstaying either tourist admission or nomad residence is still an overstay. See what happens if you overstay a visa for the general pattern, then use Migraciones rules for the Argentine process.

How to track 180-day Argentina stays

A 180-day grant plus a possible 180-day extension looks simple until you add a Chile trip, a Brazil visa run, and a US tax year. Tourist days before the switch also still exist in your passport.

Staywise (the visa compliance app for digital nomads) counts days in Argentina and every other country, with alerts 7, 3, and 1 day before a limit. Passport details stay on your device. Available on iOS. Free trial, then annual subscription. See App Store for current pricing.

Common mistakes on Argentina digital nomad files

Quoting a fake income floor. Government pages do not publish $1,000, $1,500, or $2,500 a month. Bring real activity proof. If an officer asks for more, supply it.

Applying with a nationality that needs a tourist visa. The category is only for visa-exempt nationalities.

Serving Argentine clients. The work must be for counterparties domiciled abroad.

Skipping apostille and sworn translation. Foreign contracts in English are not "fine because the officer speaks English."

Using Radex when the page says in-person. The main residence page is explicit: not through Radex. TIE is a different electronic product for entry.

Treating 180 days as two years. The published grant is 180 days, extendable. Budget the extension file, not an assumed 360-day stamp on day one.

Letting the first period end with no income evidence. The prórroga wants receipts from the residence you already held. If you did not invoice anyone, the extension story is weak.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Argentina have a digital nomad visa?

Yes. It is transitory residence for digital nomads under article 24(h) of Law 25.871 and DNM Disposition 758/2022. It is for tourist-visa-exempt nationals who provide remote services to people or companies domiciled abroad. It is not temporary or permanent immigrant residence. The published stay is up to 180 days, with a possible extension of another 180 days. You can start from abroad through TIE 24h or file in person at Migraciones after a regular entry.

How long can I stay in Argentina as a digital nomad?

Up to 180 days on the initial grant, with an extension of up to another 180 days if DNM approves. Photograph the end date on your own document. Do not assume a third period. Tourist 90-day admission is a different status if you have not switched category. When you change from tourist to art. 24(h), that is a DNM act with its own fee line, not a silent decision. The extension wants proof of income earned during the first residence.

How much income do I need for Argentina's digital nomad visa?

The official service pages do not publish a minimum monthly amount. They ask for proof of the remote activity (contracts, company backing, income or fee receipts) and at least one occupational reference. The extension asks for income received during the first residence. Bring clear, apostilled, translated evidence. Ignore unsourced dollar floors on blogs. Officers may still request extra documents, so weak or contradictory activity proof is a practical risk even without a published peso tariff.

Can I apply from outside Argentina?

Yes, through Tramitación de Ingreso Electrónica (TIE 24h) for digital nomads, then show the email authorization at the border. You can also apply in person at DNM after a regular entry, following the CABA email or interior-office instructions. The in-country residence page says the file is not done through Radex. TIE uploads include a fresh face photo, passport image, CV, request letter, and activity proof. Pay only the official tasas on the government chart.

Can I work for an Argentine company on this status?

The category is for remote services in favor of natural or legal persons domiciled in the exterior. Local employment for an Argentine-domiciled payer is a different migratory path. Keep contracts and invoices aligned with foreign counterparties. If a Buenos Aires company will pay you, do not force this digital-nomad subcategory. Use the residence type that matches local work, and expect a different document list.
